The Mogao Grottoes consist of 492 caves carved into a cliffside near Dunhuang

The Mogao Grottoes consist of 492 caves carved into a cliffside near Dunhuang, China. The caves contain hundreds of Buddhist wall paintings and painted sculptures dating back to the 4th century A.D. As the site became a more popular tourist attraction in the 1980s, there was a need to determine the impact of tourism on the paintings and sculptures. To this end, environmental monitoring stations were installed in six of the caves in 1990. The stations monitor air temperature, relative humidity, surface temperature, indoor and outdoor particulate matter, carbon dioxide, visitor count, and duration of visit. A weather station was installed on the top of the cliff to collect baseline data. According to local legend, in 366 AD a Buddhist monk, Lè Zūn (樂尊), had a vision of a thousand Buddhas and inspired the excavation of the caves he envisioned. The number of temples eventually grew to more than a thousand.[3] As Buddhist monks valued austerity in life, they sought retreat in remote caves to further their quest for enlightenment. From the 4th until the 14th century, Buddhist monks at Dunhuang collected scriptures from the west while many pilgrims passing through the area painted murals inside the caves. The cave paintings and architecture served as aids to meditation, as visual representations of the quest for enlightenment, as mnemonic devices, and as teaching tools to inform illiterate Chinese about Buddhist beliefs and stories.

These magnificent caves are also known as the Caves of a Thousand Buddhas, or Qianfodong. They are situated in the furthest northwestern area of the province of Gansu, China. The caves are part of the cliffs making up the eastern edge of Mount Mingsha and rising over the Dachuan River. The Mogao Caves are home to some of the best samples of Buddhist art composed over the course of a millennium. The caves were originally built as a place of storage for the artwork and scriptures in 366 CE. The Mogao Caves are one of the most famous of Buddhist grottoes in China. They are also counted among the three most famous Chinese sculptural sites of antiquity including the Longmen Grottoes and Yungang Grottoes. The caves are also home to notable wall paintings.

The origin of Wuhou Memorial Temple is an interesting topic in itself. The temple is believed to have been originally constructed in the 6th century to commemorate two important historical figures, Liu Bei (CE 161-223), the Emperor of the Kingdom of Shu during the Three Kingdoms (CE 220-280) dynastic period (besides the Kingdom of Shu there were the Kingdoms of Wei (CE 220-265) and of Wu (CE 229-280), and Zhuge Liang (CE 181-234), the capable military strategist appointed by Emporer Liu Bei to defend the kingdom. When Liu Bei died in 223, his son, Liu Shan (CE 207-271) assumed power in the Kingdom of Shu, retaining General Zhuge Liang with the powers of a Regent to defend the kingdom.

Zhuge Liang was the personification of noble character and intelligence. Memorial temples erected in many places after his death include a famous one in Chendu. In the middle of the Hall of Liu Bei stands the gilt clay statue of the emperor himself. Statues of his two celebrated generals Guan Yu and Zhang Fei are in side halls. Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei swore brotherhood at the Peach Garden to destroy the rebels and to defend the Han Dynasty.

You might be asked to purchase tickets for electrical car, which they call it as "Little Green frog". It’s not worth it. You would miss the 20 minute walk on a wood trail which was very enjoyable. Also, renting a coat is not necessary during the late spring and summer season. You would find it a big burden later. On you way to Yu Long Snow Mountain, you may stop by at the Dong Ba Valley culture center. They moved some families from other places to this village and let them live their normal lives. The first Gorge of the Lesser Three Gorges is the Dragon Gate Gorge

The first Gorge of the Lesser Three Gorges is the Dragon Gate Gorge. About 3,281 yards long, the Dragon Gate Gorge refers to the section of river from the west pass of Wu Gorge to the Yinwo Tan. The precipitous cliffs at the mouth face each other along the two banks making the gorge mouth look like the Kui Gate of Qutang Gorges (the entrance of the Three Gorges of Yangtze). This place is therefore reputedly known as the Little Kui Gate. While drifting in the gorge, you can admire the Dragon Gate Spring, the Ancient Plank Road, and some other sights like the Nigh-dragon pole, Yinwo Tan (the dangerous shoal of Dragon Gate Gorge), and the Bear Cave. Yangtze River Cruises

Dragon-Gate Gorge, 3 km in length, is the smallest one of the Lesser Three Gorges. The gorge highlights the remains of the longest ancient plank walkway in China. Cruising along the Dragon Gate Gorge, dozens of square holes can be found 49 feet above the water level on the cliff. The holes are arranged in two horizontal lines. The top line of holes was used to hold the support beams for the walkway itself. The lower holes were used to anchor diagonal beams to provide extra support for the walkway. That is how the plank walkway built along the face of the cliff works. Besides, Dragon Gate Gorge is also known of a number of scenic sights, including the Dragon Gate Spring, Gate Guarded by Lion, Nine Dragons Pillar, etc. Welcome to China, Chinatourguide.com is pleasure to provide service for your China tours or Indochina tours.

Dragon Gate Gorge is only 3 kilometers long, but offers a spectacular vista, since the mountains on either side of the river here are extremely high, walling in the narrow canyon so snugly that the strip of sky above seems far, far away. Remains of an ancient plank road – the longest extant walkway of its kind in China, in fact – can be seen along the cliff. Some of the rock formations and other sights here have been given special names, such as Dragon Gate Spring, Gate Guarded by Lion, Nine Dragons Pillar, and Shooting the Rapids of Silver Nest, where the boats shoot like flying arrows, so swift is the current.
Just before one leaves Dragon Gate Gorge for Misty Gorge, one passes a string of three other natural sites known, in upstreams order, as Panda Cave, Nameless Gorge and Pipazhou. The only thing that could possibly mar the idyllic scenery of Dragon Gate Gorge is the sight of the motorboats that ply the river during tea picking season, otherwise the imagery is as frozen in time.
